Lesson 7 Remixed Lesson Plan
Learning Intention: To understand what happened at the Battle of Suntel.
Success Criteria: I can use lateral reading and 21st century skills of a historian to explore what happened at the Battle of Suntel
Motivate: Ask students to provide you with the definitions to the following terms:
- Primary Source
- Secondary Source
- Vertical Reading
- Lateral Reading
- Evidence
Students are aware of all of these terms and should be able to explain fairly easily what they mean. This will orient their learning for this lesson.
Add: Share with students the infographic outlining the steps to ‘Read Like A Historian in the 21st Century’. Then, using the more detailed instruction guide, guide students through the steps by emulating the process (and have them follow with their own laptops).
Practice: Students complete their own research task practicing using the new methodology exploring ‘What really happened at the Battle of Suntel’. Students should complete in groups as this is the first time they are trying this methodology and it will take time. The information sheet and worksheet can be found here.
Success: Discuss as a class – What really happened at the Battle of Suntel? How do we know? What sources did you use that were reliable? What sources looked reliable at first but then weren’t? Which sources could you tell weren’t going to help in this research task?
Lesson 7 Remixed Content: New Methodology Infographic
The following infographic is a simplified version of the more complex methodology created for students to ‘Read like a Historian in the 21st Century’. It is still a work in progress as it may seem too complex at the moment, I’m attempting to streamline it for implementation in my education website. The detailed version of the method is hyperlinked in the lesson plan.
